Definitely one of the most powerful arguments for marriage equality that we’ve seen, this video shows a speech made by a World War II veteran on April 22nd 2009, supporting Maine’s marriage equality bill. In it he speaks of how the reasons why are exactly the same as those he went to war for – that of allowing us to all be different, without any compromises on equality.
Also speaking from a very personal angle, Philip discusses the inequality within his own family, which sees three of his sons allowed a full set of rights, and one not, simply for being gay.
However, perhaps the most moving statement of all is this one:
The woman at my polling place asked me do I believe in equality for gay and lesbian people. I was pretty surprised to be asked a question like that. It made no sense to me. Finally I asked her: what do you think I fought for in Omaha Beach?
