Phillipa Drew, an openly gay woman who was previously a high ranking British government official, has urged the GLBT community in the USA to come out of its “national closet” at the 25th annual Gay and Lesbian Leadership Conference in San Francisco last week.

Saying she believed it was a crucial step in helping protect those who are under siege in places like Uganda, Jamaica and Eastern Europe, Drew particularly focused on the United States because of the impact she felt a strong voice like that of the US could have, if LGBT leaders within the country were willing to step forward.

Sitting alongside Julie Dorf of the Council for Global Equality who moderated the panel, Drew was also joined by the mayor of Berlin, Germany, Klaus Wowereit, Former U.S. Ambassador Michael Guest, Former U.S. Congressman Jim Kolbe, and Cary Alan Johnson, executive director of the International Gay & Lesbian Rights Commission, as part of a panel at the event.
