Playing at the New World Stages off Broadway, you shouldn’t let the fact that Avenue Q is a puppet show put you off because this show is definitely not one for the kids.
Written by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, Avenue Q is set on a rundown street in outer New York and sees a mix of live characters, puppets and video clips used to tell the story of Princeton, a college grad who comes to live in the neighbourhood after discovering it’s the only place he’s going to be able to afford, and the people who live around him.
Friendly enough, these neighbours definitely make life more interesting for Princeton, whether it be the adventures of Brian, the out of work comedian, and his therapist fianceé Christmas Eve, the good hearted slacker Nicky and his rather mysterious and secretive investment banker roommate Rod, internet addict Trekkie Monster, building superintendent Gary Coleman or of the rather cute teaching assistant Kate.
A hilarious journey through the ups and downs of life and love for this band of newfound friends, Avenue Q will have your mouth dropping open with laughter as you watch the kind of puppets you’re more used to seeing on childrens shows happily discussing sex, drinking and surfing porn on the internet.
Seen and loved by just about every celebrity you could think of, including Tori Hatcher, Tom Hanks, Janet Jackson and Bette Midler, Avenue Q can be seen at the New World stages at 8pm On a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, on Saturday as 2pm and 8pm ansd Sunday at 3pm and 7.30pm, with tickets available to order online from Telecharge.com.
