Is The Lesbian Cult Vampire Classic The Hunger About To Be Remade?

She Wired are reporting that Warner Bros are apparently working on a remake of The Hunger, a classic vampire film based on the book by Whitley Strieber.
Originally starring Catherine Deneuve as a bisexual vampire called Miriam, who seduced young men and women, and Susan Sarandon as her lover and eventual victim Sarah, this film also starred David Bowie, and was first released in 1983 and soon became seen as a lesbian cult classic.
What it definitely wasn’t though was a classic vampire tale, because instead of her victims dying, they were subjected to live forever trapped in ancient ageing bodies within caskets in Miriam’s basement, with Miriam herself remaining young forever.
Far from a mainstream success, it was this twist on the traditional vampire tale, combined with the lesbian overtones, that have undoubtedly made it the cult success it is. The qurstion is whether this remake will end up going down the same route, or whether it will be a more diluted interpretation to guarantee it the more mainstream success that film studios are after these days.
