PETA Name Gay Celebrities Ellen De Generes And Tim Gunn As Their Woman And Man Of The Year
Two of the top gay celebrities in the US, Ellen De Generes and Tim Gunn have been named as the Woman And Man of 2009 by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (better known as PETA) for support of their animal friendly issues.
Well known in the fashion world for his anti-fur stance, which has seen Project Runway be a totally fur free show, Gunn is passionate about spreading the message that using fur is wrong, and has gone as far as to narrate a video for PETA that demonstrated the abuses animals who are killed for their fur endure.
Equally passionate in her feelings about animal welfare, Ellen De Generes is already a joint award winner with her wife Portia de Rossi, having received the Humane Society of the United States’ Wyler Award earlier this year for their work on behalf of the Proposition 2 ballot initiative, and was given the honor of being named Woman Of The Year by PETA for the way she used her chat show to debate animal welfare issues, such as factory farming, as well as using it to promote veganism.
Speaking about the awards Ingrid Newkirk, the president and co-founder of PETA said both Gunn and De Generes showed that “… one person really can make a difference in the world by rejecting cruel deeds in favor of compassionate acts” and that their work had acted to reach a huge amount of people who would have been impacted by their message and led to them changing their buying behaviour.
