It’s Time To Gay Up The US Census …. And Here’s What You Need To Do

The 2010 census, as it currently stands, will not include any questions concerning either gender identity or sexual orientation, something that may not seem at first like a big deal, but actually has huge knock on consequences as the information collected is not only important for government research, but also for funding and policies concerning the economy, health care and even personal security.
Whilst there are plans to include these questions in future censuses until this point HRC is recommending that transgender individuals still fill out the census using the gender identity that most closely matches theirs, and that same sex couples either choose to check the “husband/wife” or “unmarried partner” box. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force are also doing their part in helping push for LGBT questions to be included as soon as possible by offering you a FREE Queer The Census sticker that you can attach to the envelope when you send it off.
Reading “Attn : U.S Census Bureau It’s Time to Count Everyone” across the top, this pink sticker also has five check boxes offering the options of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual. Transgender and A Straight Ally, and includes the words “Everyone deserves to be counted. It’s time to QueerTheCensus.org” along the bottom.
You can order your free Queer The Census sticker here.
