Massachusetts May Have Lost A Gay Right Ally But Iowa Now Has Five!

The LGBT community may have lost a gay rights political ally when Democrat Martha Coakley was beated by Republican Scott Brown to the Massachusett Senate seat left vacant by the death of Edward Kennedy, but take a look at the grass roots levels of politics and it’s quite a different story.

And that’s no more obvious than in Iowa where on Monday night Democratic candidate Janelle Rettig, who is openly lesbian, won election to the Johnson County, Iowa Board of Supervisors. Retaining the seat that she’d been appointed to earlier this year, Rettig is also far from the only LGBT member involved in Johnson County politics which also has two city council members and the city’s elected Recorder and Registrar who are openly gay or lesbian.
