Gay sportsman Gareth Thomas last night held a coming out party, organised by UK gay magazine, Attitude, to thank everyone who has supported him since he revealed that he was gay.
Held at the Movida, a London nightclub well known for it’s celebrity clientele, the party saw Thomas joined by a host of high profile gay celebrities as well team mates and other rugby players. However not everyone that was invited turned up, with one no show being an invited high-profile gay sportsman who has yet to come out.
Thomas however was quick to say the event was never meant to be about outing people, hinting that the decline of an invitation by the gay sportsman was not necessarily tied to him hiding his sexuality saying :
“It’s not really about outing people. And, you know, when people have a game or an event, they can’t really go out drinking.”
Speaking to those who did attend the event, which included Graham Norton, Peter Tatchell, Will Young and Russell Tovey, Thomas spoke of the change that was occurring concering being openly gay saying
“Everyone here tonight is here to celebrate the world changing. . . It’s ok to be a sportsman and it’s ok to be gay.”
Describing Gareth’s decision to come out as “wonderful” Will Young commented that it was a great step forward concerning fighting homophobia in the sports world, but believed it would take time before more sportsmen and women felt comfortable being out at a high level.
