Anne Hathaway, the Oscar nominated actress who will soon be seen in the new Tim Burton adaptation of Alice in Wonderland  has told GQ magazine she and her family decided to leave the Catholic church after her brother came out, reasoning:

“Why should I support an organization that has a limited view of my beloved brother?”

Going on to say whilst the rest of her family had converted to the Episcopal church, she did not feel it was the right fit for her personally and currently sees herself as having no denomination and being a work in progress.

A long  time advocate for gay rights, Hathaway said  the reaction of her family to her brother coming out was undramatic and loving saying  “We hugged him, said we loved him and that was that.”

Anne was honoured with the HRC Ally award in 2008 by the Human Rights Campaign where she spoke about how she was not being brave for standing up for gay rights but just being a decent human.
