Connecticut Independent Senator Joe Lieberman has announced on his website that he will be acting as a sponsor of a bill  repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

If successful, the repeal of the DADT military policy will act to put the US Armed Forces in the same position as countries such as the United Kingdom and Israel who already allow gays to serve openly in the military having found that the morale and effectiveness of the forces has not been harmed by it.

Announcing his plans on his own website, Senator Joe Lieberman said:

“To exclude one group of Americans from serving in the armed forces is contrary to our fundamental principles as outlined in the Declaration of Independence and weakens our defenses by denying our military the service of a large group of Americans who can help our cause. I am grateful for the leadership of President Obama to repeal the policy and the support of Secretary Gates and Chief of Staff Admiral Mullen.”

The Palm Center will today release their findings on the impact of openly gay soldiers serving in the Armed Forces with the New York Times reporting their conclusions are in contradiction with the Pentagon who are looking to phase the changes in slowly with the report promoting it should be done quickly.
