Charity : Nuru International – Ending Terrorism By Wiping Out Extreme Poverty
Posted: 16th Nov 2009 Author: Michelle Penny Topics: Activism
Newly formed, Nuru International has been founded by a former Special Operations Platoon Commander in the US Marines, Jake Harriman, and believes that the only real solution to end terrorism once and for all is to end extreme poverty.
Currently working with the rural poor in Kuria, Kenya, Nuru has acted to group local farmers together, and then using a innovative leadership development model, trained local leaders to work with these groups to help them form solutions to their own problems. In addition to this Nuru (a Kiswahili word meaning light) have also used design thinking to help them best understand the exact needs of the community and have then employed innovation solutions to meet these needs.
Keen to make sure they’re always offering and implementing the best advice, Nuru has also established a Research Team who’s role is to seek out innovative and effective practices used by top organisations around the world, and then partnering with these organisations to help in the five key areas that Nuru work in – Agriculture, Water & Sanitation, Healthcare, Education, and Community Economic Development – where Nuru acts as general contractor of NGOs.
The end result of adding Nuru into the equation is that the impact of each organisation is increased many times over and the chance of duplication of effort is much reduced, with Nuru ensuring that revenue is generated, even during the implementaton stage, ensuring these projects will be fully financially sustainable and independent of outside funding.
Once implementation occurs, the Western Nuru staff then withdraw from the project, leaving local Nuru staff to repeat the model in neighbouring communities.
