Canadian News Website Close Comments After Gay MP’s Christmas Card Receives Homophobic Response

Canadian news website, The Globe and Mail, has said it was forced to close comments on an article about the Nova Scott Liberal MP, Scott Brison’s Christmas card after it received a number of homophobic comments. Featuring a holiday shot of Brison and his spouse, Maxime St Pierre, the card also lead to Toronto Star blogger, Susan Delacourt to decide to not allow comments from the moment of publication to prevent similar happening.

Whilst some believe the move was the right one, the editor of the Pink Triangle Press, Matt Mills, has spoken out against the decision believing that it just pushes homophobia underground instead of actually dealing with the issue, saying “I don’t think that’s constructive … We can’t fight it if we can’t see it.”

One of the few openly gay members within the Canadian parliament, Brison said that the response to the card had been in the majority positive, and that he and St Pierre, who he married in 2007, didn’t tend to suffer from any problems whe out together.

Brison also commented on how  he had had a number supporters tell him they’d been sharing the card to highight the positive attitude Canada has towards gay marriage, but that there hadn’t been any political message behind the card and that he was “looking forward to the day when this is seen as no big deal”
